Founded in 1851 by Japanese immigrants, it served as an important port between Sacramento and San Francisco. It is part of the Sacramento-Arden-Arcade-Roseville Statistical Area. The population was 1,452 at the 2020 census, down from 1,542 at the 2010 census.
